NOHO NEWS
June 2010
Monthly Hearing Schedules
ADD ME TO THE NOHO E-MAIL LIST

Totally
free, confidential and helpful if you have an interest
in the neighborhood
or want your voice counted in hearings related to our neighborhood's wellbeing.
Neighborhood Watch
We created a "watch area" for NoHo, on June 11,
2010, where you can see and can register complaints.
It is an alternative to the City's 311 system that
allows us to keep track of what is going on in our neighborhood,
in real time, and to monitor what is actually being done about it
(unlike the City's 311 system).
Current Events
If you missed last month's headlines, click
here
The Smile (26 Bond), has
withdrawn their application for a full
On-Premise Liquor License pending
discussions with neighborhood
stakeholders, tentatively scheduled for
the week of July 5th.
Back in 2008, the community reluctantly
agreed to allow a Wine and Beer license
to a new retail dry goods store...with a
long list of stipulations that included
NEVER APPLYING FOR AN ON-PREMISE
LICENSE.
Hung Ry, 55 Bond St.
After NoHo successfully won a full denial
of a Wine & Beer license at CB#2 last
month, the applicant withdrew their
application, evidently thinking they
could win NoHo over in a meeting
gathered to discuss venting in their
pulled noodle soup restaurant.
At this months CB#2 SLA hearing the
application was again denied.

Billy Reid Imports a
Smoker |
|
|
|
Knowing the kind of
Southern gentlemanly
duds that Billy Reid
wants to dress you in,
you'd almost expect to
see an open bourbon bar
and roasting pig every
time you walk by his
Bond Street Store.
Actually, on Saturday,
that's exactly what
you'll find: his friends
from Alabama are driving
up with a smoker and a
hog and doing it up in
front of the store. We
assume moonshine will be
involved, but we always
assume that. |

wondering...we know of no street

affair and have asked for some
neighborhood friendly

Welcome United Nude at 25 Bond
http://ny.racked.com/archives/2010/05/20/united_nude.php
The fashion community is all
aflutter...and we congratulate
25 Bond for securing such a
well-healed tenant. But,
we sincerely hope that the Co-Op
Board will have a serious
discussion with the Building
Management team about velvet
rope, guest list only,
security-detail,
celebrity-photo-shoot-on-the-sidewalk-with-backdrops
getting the boot.
PLEASE !

8 Bond St. - No longer
under the radar! This former
studio has become Bond St.'s
do-it-yourself nightmare club.
Originally just private parties,
it now collects an entrance
fee...and without any licenses
at all, just stays open till
dawn! But, they got raided
recently. Keep those 911
calls coming !

OAK at 28 Bond - Several
days after the end of the series
of events strung together by the
NoHo Design District, OAK added
another, complete with guest
list, DJ and refreshments served
by an Ice Cream Truck, parked at
the curb with benches to
accommodate the line-waiters.
Here's the description from
their own blog:
May 21, 2010
last night’s party with surface
to air was a rager, and the
party spilled out into the
streets (where there was an ice
cream truck, of course) and the
back areas of the bond st.
store. special thanks to surface
to air, archetype showroom, and
to all those who came out. our
bond st. store has an exclusive
selection of surface to air
jewelry that debuted yesterday –
if you didn’t have a chance to
check it out swing by the store,
it’s amazing.
But, it wasn't the
first time and probably
won't be the last !
Maybe creating a street party is
an effective strategy for
building store traffic....but
not at the expense of one's
neighbors. Have you seen
the 8' cigarette troughs now
permanently installed on either
side of their entrance?

The NoHo Design District
Event. Well, here's the gentile
version of this ad hoc,
not-permitted, totally gorilla
scheme to take over an
unsuspecting neighborhood:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/style/cool-furniture-north-american-style/article1577212/.
The brainchild of Monica
Khemsurov and Jill Singer of
Brooklyn, unsuspecting NoHo
became the NoHo Design Center
- with its own
blog in a series of displays
loosely connected to the
International Contemporary
Furniture Fair at the Jacob
Javitts Center.
The parties on Saturday from
7-10 pm on May 15 occured at
nine venues. We were assured
that all venues understood that
the parties should not spill
onto the streets, most complied
in neighborly fashion. The
biggest event, at 45 Great
Jones, was to have a doorman to
help ensure things would remain
quiet and manageable. We were
also informed that all
venues taking advantage of the
sponsored “tasting” would have
professional bar tenders.
The sponsor?
Macallan Scotch.
The party at 45 Great Jones,
complete with DJ and only
minimally impressive design
offerings raged past 2:45 am. -
no doorman, of course.
There's got to be a better way!
NoHo neighbors and designers are
working to find one...minus
Khemsurov and Singer. |
